#1 What more would Robby have to do?
After TJ Finley threw his second interception we got to see Auburn’s offense with Oregon transfer Robby Ashford at the helm. His speed and strong arm provided Auburn with both its longest pass and run of the night. More importantly, he protected the football and looked comfortable. So what is keeping the staff from announcing him as QB1 heading into SJSU? What more could he have done to prove he is the better option?
#2 Our secondary is a little concerning.
I am honestly a little worried about our secondary. We have a lot of talent there but miscommunication led to several plays that could have been big busts. Hopefully, this is something we can iron out in the first two weeks. Still, not a major fan of our softer zone approach but will wait and see if it can be successful with our players.
#3 Is It Me or Does Tank Look Better?
Yes, it was against Mercer but Tank Bigsby looked quicker and a little faster. His “wiggle” seemed more effective and followed his blocks better than he has in the past. Could it be that in his third year we see even more of his potential? Auburn could benefit tremendously from Tank being able to produce more explosive plays.
#4 Is Camden Brown Another Preseason Ghost?
While the emergence of Ja’Varrius Johnson was great, I think a lot of the Auburn fanbase felt a little jipped. How was Camden Brown routinely the guy everyone was raving about after each scrimmage but he saw the field so little in this game? Maybe Shedrick Jackson’s comment about “No Block. No Rock.” was a nudge for the younger guys? Here’s hoping Auburn is just saving him for the big games.
#5 Playcalling Seemed Improved
Yes, it was Mercer. Yes, our offense is a vanilla version of the full-fledged thing right now. Still, there weren’t nearly the number of head-scratching moments in this game. The speed sweeps getting multiple receivers involved in the run game were great and it feels like we rotated in more younger guys than usual. Hopefully, we can keep seeing some solid playcalling and no fades on 4th and goal.
